Product Redesign
I have redesigned dryer sheets packaging! This was an assignment for my Advanced Visual Media (Comm 462) class at BYU-Idaho. We were able to choose any product that we wanted to redesign and I chose to redesign Great Value’s Paradise Fresh dryer sheets. I had been walking around Wal-Mart looking at products and I saw some tissues in a cylinder container and had the idea to put the dryer sheets inside a cylinder so that they could dispense easier.
Client / Target Audience
My client for this design is Great Value and my target audience is women. Women are typically the ones who do laundry and also the ones who decorate the house. I wanted my dryer sheets to be more than just a box of sheets, but a decoration that you would be proud to leave sitting on top of your dryer.
Problem Solving
The main thing I found wrong with the current design of the dryer sheets is that the box isn’t very cute. Also, once the box is open the dryer sheets can loose their scent from the open lid. By putting the dryer sheets in a dispensable cylinder there is more room for a design and the sheets are better protected from airing out and loosing their scent.
Creating the Product
Honestly, the hardest part of this entire project was just coming up with a design / pattern for the product. I made several drafts and nothing was working the way I wanted. Then I found a doodle I had made in a notebook a few weeks ago and it gave me the inspiration I had been seeking. So I sat down one night and doodled while I watched Harry Potter. I drew a design that I then used the Adobe Shape app to vectorize and take into Adobe Illustrator and clean up. I created my color scheme with Adobe Kueler and used the color swatches to fill in my design.
I thought putting my design onto my container was going to be the hardest part, but turned out to be the easiest! After perfecting my design I was able to take it to Alpha Graphics and they printed my design on a sticker label and they even put it nicely on my container. It was a piece of cake!
