Learn to Speak British

I have created an American vs. British English infographic. I lived in England for 18 months and when I came home, I didn’t come home with a British accent, but I definitely came using the words that the British use.  I discovered that Americans love the British and we are fascinated with the way they speak.  It is sometimes humorous to see the differences in our languages when we are both speaking English.

I made this infographic with an American target audience in mind because I live in America.  I also have a lot of British friends that I thought might appreciate this infographic as well.   But with the American audience in mind, I put the American words first and in the brighter red so that it would be easy to find words that they associate with and then see the British version underneath.

This infographic was a project for my Advanced Visual Media course at BYU-Idaho.  I was required to keep the graphic with certain dimensions (see full size infographic at the top) and that caused a problem when I had more information than I had room for.  I ended up shortening the width and shrinking my information so that I had more room to include more words.  I had quite a list of words and was only able to use about 3/4 of them.

Another challenge was in creating flow.  With just lists of words it was challenging to create flow rather than have a long list.  I tried separating the graph into sections and grouping words together.  The dotted lines helped a lot in giving my design movement and leading you through the information.

I used Adobe Illustrator to create this entire graphic.  I used the pen tool and shape tools for all of my icons.  I  also used Pinterest and sketching to help me come up with my main ideas. I created a Pinterest board with different infographic ideas that helped inspire me. You can also find my infographic pinned there!
